Rescue Gulf Workers, Pleads Dr. JP

Lok Satta Party’s National Coordinator Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan (Dr. JP) today asked the State Government to go to the rescue of Nizamabad district workers who had reportedly been sentenced to death or various terms of jail. The State Government, through the Indian Embassy in the UAE, should provide legal assistance and enable the sentenced to go in appeal.

Dr. JP said the incident once again highlighted the troubles the illiterate and gullible migrant workers faced because of the unscrupulous methods employed by brokers with political backing. Those who had returned on their own or with Government assistance are facing extreme hardship and some of them have reportedly ended their lives.

Dr. JP said the Government should immediately arrange to bring back Telugu-speaking people who are without proper job visas by sea route, if necessary. The Government should declare a three-year moratorium on their debts and provide them employment skills.

The Government of India, he said, should take up with the International Labor Organization the grievance of Indian workers that they were being thrown out of Gulf countries without being paid wages for the days they had worked. Simultaneously, the State Government should take stringent action against brokers with political backing who were taking innocent people for a ride.

  1. It is very human issue. The socio-economical situation in our county is the primary reason for the Indian workers migrate to Gulf. It is a very harsh life there. Now if they are left in the midst with strict Gulf laws, it is not fair.

  3. A lot is said about rescuing and providing legal help to convicted Indian workers abroad especially in Middle east countries where islamic law is generally in force. It shall be also kept in mind that these countries respond unkindly and unfairly to such responces from the nativelands of the convicted people and can even get to be detrimental to their further plight.

It is also true that very little is being discussed on the actual charges against which the sentences are given out keeping the general public in the dark and possibly resulting in unwanted hatred against those countries.

Many countries where great numbers migrate to gulf and other foriegn countries take effective measures to protect the Human rights and financial interests of their countrymen lawfully due to them instead of making war cries when such an isolated incidents of sentences meted and wash off their hands. This responsible behaviour has to stem in general accross the political circles cutting party lines instead of doing blame games against the Government.

Especially intellectually rich parties like Loksatta should look in that direction and voice policy level convictions and work towards making them implemented.
