A clarification

Friends,
Several of you have sent emails on the Margadarsi issue and Lok Satta Party’s stand. Clearly, there has been a misunderstanding about our position. I gave a statement in good faith with an intention to raise the quality of public debate, and focus on key issues in dealing with financial institutions. We have neither supported, nor opposed any individual, group or party.

The statement essentially outlines three objectives in dealing with such matters.

Protecting depositors’ interests: Deft handling by regulatory agencies is required to prevent a run on deposits.

Promoting financial stability: Trust in institutions is critical to prevent a cascading effect and eventual collapse.

Role of the Regulator: The RBI, as the Central Bank, has an impeccable record of regulating financial institutions and laying down monetary policy. The Central Bank must act to protect the depositors, prevent cascading effect, penalize wrong doing, and it must be allowed to do so without fear or favour.

All these are unexceptionable points made in the hope that the quality of public discourse will be enhanced by reason, dispassionate analysis and a problem solving approach.

At no stage did Lok Satta Party attack any party or government, nor did it support any individual or group. However, when society is aroused by passion with great ease, it seems to be difficult to steadfastly pursue public interest sans partisanship. Several people misconstrued our comments as unreserved support for a business group, or unrestrained attack on the government. A careful examination of facts clearly proves otherwise.

This stand on preventing a run on deposits is consistent with the Lok Satta’s movement’s stand, earlier, when urban banks were collapsing. Lok Satta then strongly criticized the government’s inept handling of the situation and argued for a revolving fund with contributions from banks and governments to give confidence to depositors.

Lincon once said, “Public opinion is everything; without it nothing can be done, and with it nothing can fail.” In this case, people are divided on the issue and positions are taken easily, and articulated with passion. Once we had realized that for a Party dedicated to creating new politics for a new generation, this issue is a needless digression, I publicly stated that Lok Satta Party would serve public interest better by staying away from the issue. Since then, we have maintained silence on the subject.

Some of our friends and well – wishers have, obviously, strong views on the subject, and they are entitled to them. Lok Satta Party has no interest in the matter, except to protect the interests of depositors and promote rule of law.

I hope you understand and appreciate the fair, balanced, rational, legally correct and morally sound position of Lok Satta Party on this issue. Some may still disagree, and we respect their views. But we have an excruciatingly difficult task of building a better democracy, and we need to put this episode behind us. The nation’s future and the opportunities created for all children irrespective of birth are far too important to permit needless digressions.

  1. Dear Mr JP,

I appreciate your support to Margadarsi Chit Fund and Ramoji Group.

Kindly consider the fact that media in Andhra Pradesh devoid of "objective point of view".

I'd propose a Media Rating Service similar to CRISIL in financial industry.

The Media Rating Service should rate media in order to stop propagating "sarcasm and hypocrisy" in the society.

Kindly poll your opinion here http://www.blogpoll.com/poll/view_Poll.php?type=java&poll_id=91558

    Sincerely,

  2. Jawahar,

JP didn’t support Margadarshi or Ramoji group, his views are based on the best interests of public.
People in media or politics should understand that they have a responsibility to view issues on the good interests
of public n society in general.

Before JP's speech to media on the Issue..I had the good regard for Undavalli Arun kumar that he is doing right
by bringing out the real issues behind Margadarshi financiers. But unknowingly the damage that he is doing to a financial institution is staggering n unacceptable. His propaganda should have ended when he complained to Finance minister and RBI, but out of his sheer ignorance he is damaging the reputation of a financial institution thus jeopardizing the interests of lakhs of depositors of Margadarshi..Imagine if all the depositors of SBI goes in a day and withdraw their money out of rumors and false propaganda, even SBI couldn’t handle the situation and may collapse, thus leading to collapse of our economy in general.

It’s outmost important to government that financial institutions in general shouldn’t default and its depositors shouldn’t loose their hard earned money. The classic instance I can reminder is when North American country Mexico is in great danger of default, American president Bill Clinton pumped 25 billion dollars to Mexico to save it from financial collapse(reference: Bill Clinton's biography book "My Life: Presidential years"), Mexican's collapse inturn should have huge impact on the health of the world economy. We need leaders who has foresight n knack to handle the crisis situations properly, else we shall have the "Power" problems that we are facing now.

JP aired his views on the best interests of public and Margadarshi depositors in general, nowhere he has taken biased views. We shouldn’t be so prejudice that since he appeared in Etv n aired his views doesn't mean that he supported Margadarshi or Ramoji group. All those guys who felt betrayed needs replay of his interview ten times I think to understand what exactly he meant on the issue.

  4. Its very unfortunate that JP had to give personal explanation to so called 'educated' group of society. One has to have non-partisan view to understand his views.
For the people who have read only eenadu version of his statement which obviously highlights the points which help them, please read this.

I agree with u. However Lincoln's quote mentioned by JP “Public opinion is everything; without it nothing can be done, and with it nothing can fail” actually confused me. Is that completely true? May not be. Public (means all of us) behaves most of the times as per mass psychology, being carried away by momentary emotions and simplistic logic rather than trying to understand the complex situations. I think there comes the role of a true leader in bringing back sanity to the society. In democracy public opinion decides everything for that moment of time, but truth and long term good should be the basis of actions of a true leader rather than public opinion. After all, the public opinion is changeable.

Obviously media has a great role in deciding public opinion. I really hate the present AP media. Everyday you read opinions rather than news. Though it is the lesser evil, but by being the leading news paper, Eenadu shares most of the sin of delivering biased news to AP people. Passion's suggestions make sense. Press council should be more active I suppose in defining and monitoring the standards of media.

And finally present politicians...they play with more sensitive issues such as religion. Economical issues are not a big deal for them.
Its time. Let us get rid of them.

  6. The tragedy with HNI is they fail to appreciate Neutral Point Of View.

They perceive world as supporters or opposition.
