A little about me

Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan is a physician by training, a public servant by choice, and a democrat by conviction. He joined the IAS in 1980. During his 16 years of public service in various capacities, he had many accomplishments to his credit. He is still remembered fondly by the people of the districts he once worked for. Some of his achievements include

  • Rehabilitation of 8000 youth from displaced families of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
  • Designing the reconstruction of drainage and irrigation network in Krishna and Godavari deltas.
  • Strengthening the credit cooperatives and making them independent of government control.
Dr JP was involved in formulating major policy initiatives such as developing an Info‑City in Hyderabad to facilitate the growth of the software industry. Hi‑Tec City, as we all have witnessed, has grown into one of the most prominent IT hubs of India.

In spite of an impressive personal achievement, Dr. JP’s experience in government convinced him that faulty governance process is the biggest hurdle in India’s path of progress.

In order to translate his vision into practical reality, he resigned from the IAS in 1996, and with like-minded citizens formed Lok Satta Movement in 1997. Lok Satta has now emerged as India’s leading civil society initiative for political and governance reforms with wide popular base in Andhra Pradesh.

Over the last decade, Lok Satta has significantly influenced India’s democratic evolution. Some of the milestones include:
  • Mandatory disclosure of criminal and financial antecedents of all candidates contesting for electoral office
  • Political Funding Reform
  • Size of Council of Ministers – 91st Amendment
  • Anti-defection provisions
  • Efforts aimed at making voter registration simple
  • Lok Satta’s advocacy resulted in the National Health Mission, whose objective is creating universal access to healthcare over the next decade
  • Right to Information (RTI) Act adopted by the parliament following Lok Satta's nation-wide civil society movement
  • Citizen's Charters across all municipalities of Andhra Pradesh
Dr. JP had also served on the following panels.
  • 1. The National Advisory Council (NAC) for the implementation of the National Common Minimum Programme
  • 2. Vigilance Advisory Council
  • 3. Second Administrative Reforms Commission constituted by the Government of India
Most of the critical governance and political reforms must be driven by political parties and not civil society alone. Lok Satta Party with Dr. JP as national coordinator was initiated as a citizens’ response to this challenge, to usher in a New Political Culture.

  4. Dear Dr JP, You have to make a humble beginning as a sold elected MLA of AP Assembly. You need to face stalwards in Congress, TDP, TRS, PRP, Communists, etc and fight for the cause of the people who have chosen you to be their representative. This crusade against power hungry politicians and others (like bureaucrarts)has to go on relentlessly. Please enlist support from like minded persons and do the best and justice in and outside Assembly. We sincerely pray God to give you strength in all your endeavours.

  5. A small correction please. Read 'sole' instead of "sold". Regret for typographical error.

Congratulations Dr. JP, on winning from KKP.
My home is in BHEL, R.C.Puram, currently reside in Oslo, Norway.
I am not sure that you will read this comment, inspite, i choose to write my comment. Yes, its my deliberate choice :-)
Have been going thru various videos uploaded on Youtube yesterday, and found your speeches, incredibly inspiring and intellectually appealing. I was in awe all the while I was watching them.

I would like to know your perspective on the subject - Motivation, the young and the elderly alike.
Looking at the figure of percentage of India participating in the election, a little over 60%, and roughly 29crores of them choosing not to vote is a concern.

I bet 70-80% of the 29crore are the educated youth who have lost hope that they can contribute to change. Motivating this lot has the potential to give the required momentum to CHANGE.

Could you please provide your inspiring thoughts on Motivation.
I am sure you will agree that different feather require different technique. How will you organize to flock birds of different feather to bring about harmony ?

    In anticipation.

    Regards
    Srinivas D

Now show your power that politics is not a business its a service.
So far leaders are competing to make money, make them to compete for country's development. I hope you become a role model for new young politics.

    Hi,

Dont forget to involve people in loksatta movement. Seems like you will be buzy from now so it may divert to other way. Try to make another massmovement, awareness campaigns. That is very important and lifeline for losatta in near future.

  15. Dear Dr. JP.

    Fist of all Congratulations.

I, Vishnu am a resident of Snehapuri Colony, Motinagar, Hyderabad of your Assembly constituency. Recently GHMC has laid roads in our locality. I appreciate they looked at our colony where the roads were damaged and laid the roads. But my complaint is that they laid roads for half of the lane and left the rest. When asked, they said they are doing as per the permision. I donot understand how they can lay roads for half of the lane while the road for the entire lane is damaged.

    Dear Respected Dr.JP,
I am pursuing MBA in UK and I hail from AP. I feel immensely proud for sharing an epoch with you as a contemporary. The concept of "avoidable suffering" you've put forth has fascinated me and since then I am a die hard fan of you. You have transcended the dimensions of the evident conventional, Unscrupulous political scenario in India by stepping into the Assembly victoriously. You are someone we can show to the world as a proof of the existing glory of Indian Democracy. I love you for what you are and wish to see you fighting for the rejuvenation of our nation with indomitable spirit. We are with you and for you always. Go ahead and make the difference you wish to.
Hail JP!! Hail Loksatta!! and Hail Mother India!!.

  20. I have heard today the ralay of your ACB bill that you think would benefit in every way. I have even herad the Q&A in that interview. I am very pleased and do agree to most of them. I do understand that the high standard corruptions etc in politics or the government offices is to be questioned and erradicated. However, I do think of the common man, whose means of living arre just his salary that has to meet the needs of the members of the family. I am not speaking about greedy individuals but about the man in his miseries, who attemptes to stretch his hand for bribes to meet the basic needs of his family, food, clothing and shelter. I know you are more aware about the things in India than me, but wanted to draw your attention to the prices of basic groceries and needs in our country. Paying Rs 30/- for a kilo of rice cannot suffice the poorer of the poorest to have a square meal. At the same time the farmers are either commiting suicides or moving away from cultivation. The pictur is clear that middle men are robbing the most and making the life of a common man and the farmers suffer on both the ends.

I think apart from ACB, this aspect if is corrected in parallel, it would be a sheltered refugee for the people not to stretch their hands for bribes to have square meals and send their children to a school.

I apologise if it is of offence to anyway one, but aim is not that at all. I do understand that few people in hand can do few things and its not an overnight agenda. Just wanted to place my anguish in this blog, if you happen to read, to let you know that even if far our souls keep thinking of our country.

I want to gain some more experience in medical research that I am working in at the moment but some day I will be back to contribute to our country's sources in whatever I have been learning here, not so far from you all.

    Sir,

I just saw you in Lakshmi Talk Show.. One thing, like you said, always affected me.. that the vote is not being used properly.. A reason why majority of youth cannot vote is because of colleges and jobs.. for example, even though i belong to A.P, I was studying in Rajasthan and many of my seniors worked in Bangalore, Calcutta, Delhi... and other cities, because of which, even though we very much want to utilise our right to vote, we couldnt.. Is there any way we can make everyone vote, irrespective of where they belong...like some computer database system which checks off as soon as a person votes ??
